Learn to see the music
the way you hear it
My approach to teaching music theory starts with our ears. As musicians, we rely on our ears for many things, and it should be no different with music theory. I reinforce musical patterns you’ve heard and are already familiar with, and show you how to understand those patterns through a theoretical framework.
How it works
Virtual sessions in theory involve a mixture of lecture, discussion, listening, practice, and homework. I’ll give you review sheets to test your knowledge, and help you improve your habits and knowledge.
Start now!Note: I won’t help you complete a homework assignment for school. You benefit the most when I help you understand how to work through your homework on your own, rather than give you the answers.

What others say
I had Julian for most of my musicianship classes last year, and during that time, my theory and aural skills improved dramatically. Julian is an amazing instructor who is very knowledgeable, relatable, and patient. There were times in the course when I got frustrated with the material, but Julian always reassured me and took time to help me understand. I particularly was impressed by Julian’s ability to showcase theory examples using popular music, classical music, jazz music, and everything in between. This allowed me to make real-life connections to the theory topics we learned in class. I think these connections are due to Julian’s piano abilities. When examples needed to be played, Julian played them at a very high level. He is also a favorite pianist among voice students, due to his amazing coaching ability and sheer talent. If you’re looking for someone who can tutor you in theory or give you piano lessons, Julian is your best bet for success.

Julian Jenson is a phenomenal musician and teacher. I have taken two theory classes with him and a year of voice coachings. His attention to detail and genuine care for individual students’ success is unmatched. He always strives for students to be masters of their craft and always leaves them wanting to learn more. He gives very insightful feedback on musicality and makes the environment productive for all.

Having had him as an instructor of high level theory, as well as seeing him perform, I can say from first hand experience that Julian is a great teacher. He makes learning music enjoyable and cares that his students understand the material. Concerning any type of music theory, or any type of music for the piano, getting tutoring or lessons with Julian would be time and money very well spent!

Working with Julian has been a real pleasure. Music theory has always been a very difficult subject to understand for me due to its complex nature. When I met Julian during my undergrad years, he helped break down these complex ideas into understandable and manageable blocks of information that created a good foundation. Julian accomplished this by being engaging and always evaluating my progress and needs. During my masters, Julian has given me the tools to be able to identify and overcome theory challenges on my own and grow as a musician.

Julian Jenson is an exceptionally warm and dedicated teacher. His knowledge of theory and repertoire is impressive. Working with Julian Jenson as a Theory Tutor is an engaging, clarifying and stimulating experience. I appreciate that he always connects abstract ideas to concrete examples when discussing music theory. He is also a sensitive and thoughtful pianist. Learning from him has enriched my musicianship in an invaluable way.

FAQS
Can you help me with my homework?
I cannot give you answers, but I can teach you what you need to answer the questions on your homework confidently. I can also provide practice questions that are similar to your homework which will help you.
For the Music Theory Hotline, what is the best format to frame my question?
Formulate your question with the kind of information you need. For example, “I don’t know what Augmented Sixth Chords are. Can you give me the basic rundown?” will be met with a general overview of the three augmented sixth chords. By contrast, if you ask “When do I know when a piece is in Binary form, compared to Ternary form?” then I’ll give you a chart or video explaining the differences between the two and the key musical cues to look for.
Do you offer group tutoring?
I do, and the pricing for this group tutoring depends on the size of the group and the needs you have. Reach out to me for more information, as it can be an effective way for you and your friends to save money and learn collaboratively together.
Can you teach me non-classical music theory?
I can offer assistance in various western styles, like jazz, pop, or Christian worship music, but I have the most training in classical music theory (the music of 18th century western european composers). The further from that musical tradition you want assistance in, the less I will have to offer. For example, I don’t know much about Indian classical musical traditions, or middle eastern traditions. If you want to learn more about these, ask me for a list of colleagues I know who could give you what you need.
How many problems can I expect to see on a personalized review sheet or homework assignment?
Generally I’ll give you a sheet of paper’s worth of problems, which can mean a different number of problems depending on the topic. If you need a sheet of interval identification to drill for an upcoming test, that might have 50+ problems on it. If you need to improve your harmonic analysis, that may have no more than four or five problems, since analysis involves more and takes more time. I will always tailor these review sheets and homework assignments to your individual needs. Here's a sample!
If I send a homework assignment back to you, is it graded?
I don’t grade assignments, but I correct them. The difference is that this doesn’t go on any kind of academic record. So, while you will see the number of problems you got correct out of the total, I don’t score these like a teacher would in a class. I do, however, give detailed feedback and explain where you need to improve.
How detailed is your feedback?
Very. I never liked when in school I would get a sheet of paper with red marks and no explanation, so when I correct your assignments, I do two things: 1) look for patterns in your work that will let me make judgments as to your analytic habits, and then 2) I add sentences or paragraphs-worth of explanation where I feel it’s necessary. I try to make sure you understand what you need to.
